Herr Rehhagel, who guided Greece at the age of 71 in 2010, now trails Ghana’s Carlos Queiroz (73 years and 124 days), South Africa’s Hugo Broos (74 years and 79 days), Czechia’s Miroslav Koubek (74 years and 296 days) and Advocaat, who was 78 years and 271 days when he led Curaçao against Côte d’Ivoire.

Helmut Schon took four World Cups to reach 25. Deschamps eclipsed it in 2026 – and despite sadly missing the 4-1 victory over Norway as he attended his mother’s funeral. The 57-year-old led France to the quarter-finals in 2014, the title four years later, a runners-up finish last time out and fourth place here. Deschamps also surpassed Schon as the coach with the most World Cup victories.

The No9 was sent on with Switzerland struggling against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two minutes and 46 seconds later, he fired them ahead. Then Manzambi, at 20 years and 247 days, struck again to remove Paraguayan Nelson Cuevas from history.

Miroslav Klose led by three going into edition 23. Lionel Messi required just one-run out to go level. Then he and Kylian Mbappe engaged in an electric and enthralling race to leave in first place. Messi led Mbappe by one at the tournament’s start and three by the group stage’s finish, but the Frenchman careered down the final straight to pip the Argentinian to the post by one.

Klose, with an advantage of only one, suspected this milestone would dismantle. ‘The Atomic Flea’ zoomed past the aerial specialist by inspiring Argentina to seven successive wins. Kylian Mbappe, with 17 victories, is now on Messi’s trail.

The palatial Spaniard shattered his own record: 638 successful passes at Qatar 2022. Rodri had stolen it from compatriot Xavi, who completed 599 at South Africa 2010.

The 41-year-old Portugal No7 became the first man to net in six World Cups – a feat that eluded his rival Lionel Messi, who failed to find the target at South Africa 2010 – and the second-oldest marksman in the competition’s history after Roger Milla. Denmark’s Michael Laudrup, Messi and Ronaldo remarkably reign as their nations’ youngest and oldest World Cup scorers.

The Curaçao keeper equalled the record by exasperating Enner Valencia and Ecuador in Kansas City. Tim Howard registered an identical haul for USA against Belgium in 2014, but Room did it in 30 fewer minutes. Curaçao, with around 156,000 inhabitants, had earlier become the smallest nation by population to ever play in the World Cup, eclipsing Iceland. Cabo Verde, with around 530,000, became the littlest to reach the World Cup knockout phase.

The Spain goalkeeper amazingly kept seven clean sheets in eight matches. The next best at one edition was five, managed by the Netherlands’ Jan Jongbloed in 1974, Italy’s Walter Zenga in 1990, Brazil’s Taffarel in 1994, France’s Fabien Barthez in 1998, Germany’s Oliver Kahn in 2002, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon in 2006 and Spain’s Iker Casillas in 2010. Simon, Pedro Porro, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Cucurella helped Spain, despite facing Kylian Mbappe and France and Lionel Messi and Argentina, concede only one goal – the fewest conceded by a World Cup-winning team. Fabien Barthez and France of 1998, Gigi Buffon and Italy of 2006, and Iker Casillas and Spain of 2010 had leaked two.
